Pronunciation

Pronunciation of élladian names is very different of english pronunciation, so do read this page through carefuly.

 

A - always like the vowel in word "car" or "but"

B - no difference ("but")

C - if it is followed by vowel O, A, U, it sounds like "K" (as in word key)

   - if it is followed by vowel E, I, it sounds like the last sound in the word "lets"; it is NOT pronounced like e.g. Cicero in English!

   - there are some exception, e.g. in the name Ela-Caracim are both "C" pronounced as "K" 

D - no difference ("deep")

E - always like the vowel in sord "end"

F - no differences ("follow")

G - always like in the word "give"

H - no differences ("have")

CH - very difficult to explain becouse this sound is missing in English. It sounds a bit like "H", but it is formed nod so deep in the throat. It is NOT pronounced like e.g. church in English!

I - no differences ("bit")

J - it is pronounced like "I" standing near other vowel; It sounds like "I" in the word "boiled"

K - no differences ("key")

L - no differences ("lamp")

M - no differences ("more")

N - no differences ("never")

O - always like in the word "lot"

P - no differences ("piece")

Q - no differences ("quite")

R - very rough sound; you have to form it in the frontal part of the mouth; tap the tongue of palate just behind the teeth.

S - no differences ("slim")

T - no differences ("tall")

U - like vowel in the word "look"

V - no differences ("very")

W - is pronounced like "V"

X - like K+S, e.g. in the word "extreme"

Y - like I

Z - no differences ("zero")

 

If the vowel is marked by a stroke ("Már"), the pronunciation is longer.
